The international interest for automotive biofuels and gasification has probably never been greater! Participants from 24 nations have already registered to the SYNBIOS-conference in Stockholm 18-20 May! This will surely be an international conference with participants from all over the world showing the great interest for automotive biofuels and gasification of biomass.

The Swedish Road Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Energy Agency and Ecotraffic invites to the seminar The Car and the Climate in Stockholm 24 November. Will the car fulfill the demands on low particle emissions and climate? Program in Swedish.
Nordic seminarium "Particles and Health" November 26, 2003 in Stockholm.
Presentation by Peter Ahlvik at the IEA Annex XV Meeting in Stockholm June 17-18, 2003.
Peter Ahlvik held a presentation at the IEA Annex XV Meeting in Stockholm June 17-18 2003. The presentation was as summary of a previous study of well-to-wheel efficiency of passenger cars fuelled by alternative fuels. The presentation was based on a study carried out for the Swedish National Road Administration. An English report from this study can be downloaded through a link on this home page. In total, 98 combinations of fuels and powertrains were assessed. The timeframe was 2010 to 2015. Among the biofuels, dimethyl ether (DME), hydrogen and methanol had the highest efficiency. Of the fuel converters ("engines"), fuel cells and diesel engines were more efficient than otto engines. Hybrid electric drivetrains were more efficient than conventional drivetrains.
Presentation by Peter Ahlvik at the DEER 2003 Conference.
Peter Ahlvik will hold a presentation at the DEER 2003 Conference (Diesel Engine Emission Reduction Conference) i Newport, Rhode Island, USA, August 26, 2002. The Conference is organized by the Department of Energy (DOE) to co-ordinate government and commercial efforts in reducing diesel engine emissions. The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum for the Federal and State agency personnel involved with diesel engines as users, regulators, or supporting research and development along with the diesel engine manufacturers, the national laboratories, academia, the environmentalists, and the health effects community. Participation is limited to Americans and specially invited speakers. Peter’s presentation has the title "Summary of Swedish Experiences on CNG and 'Clean' Diesel Buses". The presentation is based on a compilation of Swedish emission data and comparisons with corresponding US data. The presentation and the corresponding paper will be published later at the Internet site of Ecotraffic.
Magnus Swahn, earlier at Green Cargo, has joined Ecotraffic as part owner and senior consultant.

Peter Ahlvik speaks at the DEER 2002 Conference (Diesel Engine Emission Reduction Conference) i San Diego, USA, 2002-08-27. Peters presentation has the title "A Comparison of Two Gasoline and Two Diesel Cars with Varying Emission Control Technologies" and it is based on a study that was carried out for the Swedish National Road Administration (see news from 2002-05-22). The presentation and the paper will be published later at the Internet site of Ecotraffic.
In a study for the Swedish National Road Admnistration the exhaust emissions from two petrol and diesel cars have been investigated. In Europe, the share of diesel cars of the new car sales has increased considerably during the past years, as these cars have lower fuel consumption and emissions of climate gases compared to petrol cars. Improvements of the catalyst technology has significantly reduced the exhaust emissions from petrol cars. The study shows that this finding is also valid at low ambient temperatures, although this problem has not been completely solved yet. The emissions of most harmful emissions were on a similar level for petrol and diesel cars, and in some cases the level was lower for the diesel cars. Two problems remain for the diesel cars and that is NOx and particulate emissions. Particulate filters, as recently introduced on the market by Peugeot/Citroën, can reduce the particulate emissions. Other manufacturers will follow this example. Technology that could reduce NOx emissions is currently in development, but ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel has to be available on a large part of the European market before this technology could be introduced. In the future, the difference in emissions between petrol and diesel cars will diminish and then the energy efficiency will probably be of increasing importance. The report can be ordered or downloaded from the Internet site of the Swedish National Road Admnistration (www.vv.se).
New publications and presentations have been added for downloading on the website. In addition, an update of the information on the site has been made for several of the previously available publications. The new publications are:
- Well-to-wheel efficiency. This study compares the efficiency from well-to-wheel for 98 combinations of fuels and drivetrains for passenger cars.
- DEER Workshop 2001. The paper and the presentation made by Peter Ahlvik at the DEER Workshop in Portsmouth in the USA in August 2001 is available for downloading.
- Bus and car. This report compares emissions and the impact of emissions on health and environment from buses and passenger cars. The report is in Swedish.
Ecotraffic arranges a seminar on motor alcohols on 19 September. The subject for the seminar is "Requirements for large-scale introduction of motor alcohols as fuels on the Swedish market". The seminar is held at Scandic Park Hotel in Stockholm. The participants represent different stakeholder groups in the whole chain; production - distribution - use. The purpose of the seminar is to conduct a survey of barriers and opportunities for biobased motor alcohols in Sweden.
The seminar will comprise: - motor alcohols (etanol and methanol) - fuel blends and pure alcohol - cars and heavy duty vehicles - otto and diesel engines, fuel cells
